Office Fire Safety Checklist

By Fire Safety BD · Last updated

A short walk-through any office manager can do: equipment, exits, electrics and people.

You do not need to be an expert to spot the most common fire safety problems in an office. Walk the floor with this list once a month.

Equipment

  • Extinguishers are visible, unobstructed and within their service date.
  • There is a suitable extinguisher near servers and electrical panels.
  • Smoke detectors are fitted and tested.

Exits

  • Corridors, stairs and exit doors are clear and unlocked during working hours.
  • Exit signs can be seen from every desk.
  • Emergency lighting comes on when the power is cut.

Electrics

  • Multi-plugs are not overloaded or chained together.
  • Damaged cables and sockets are taken out of use.
  • Paper and boxes are not stored in electrical or server rooms.

People

  • Everyone knows the alarm, the route out and the assembly point.
  • New staff are shown on their first day.
  • A drill has been held and recorded.

Frequently asked questions

How often should an office fire safety check be done?

A simple walk-through once a month catches most everyday problems such as blocked exits and overloaded sockets. It adds to, and does not replace, professional inspection and servicing.

Who should do the check?

Give it to one named person — an office manager or floor warden — so it is not left to chance, and have someone else cover when they are away.
