Description
An LED exit sign light is an internally lit sign box that shows people the way out of a building. This model has a white housing and a green legend with the running-man pictogram and an arrow; LEDs behind the legend keep it bright, and a rechargeable battery keeps it lit when the power fails. Unlike a printed sticker, it stays readable in darkness and through light smoke.
What does the green running man mean?
The white figure running through a doorway on a green background is the international emergency-exit pictogram of ISO 7010. It is understood without reading any language, which matters in workplaces where not everyone reads English. The arrow beside it shows which way to go:
| Arrow | Meaning | Typical position |
|---|---|---|
| Down | Exit is through the door below this sign | Directly above an exit door |
| Left or right | Exit is in that direction | Corridors and open floors |
| Up | Go straight ahead | Facing an approach route |
Where should exit signs be installed?
- Above every exit door and every door on the escape route
- At each stair entrance and on stair landings
- At every change of direction in a corridor
- Anywhere the next sign or the exit itself cannot be seen
From any point on an escape route, at least one exit sign should be in view.
How far away can it be read?
For an internally lit sign, EN 1838 takes the maximum viewing distance as 200 times the height of the legend. A legend 15 cm high can therefore serve a viewing distance of about 30 m; longer corridors need a bigger sign or an extra one.
Maintained operation and battery backup
Exit signs are normally "maintained": lit all the time the building is occupied, and switched automatically to the internal battery on a power failure. Test it monthly with the test button and run a full-duration test once or twice a year. Buyers looking for a marked product usually ask for emergency luminaires made to IEC/EN 60598-2-22.
Applications
- Above exit doors and stair doors
- Corridors and production floors in garment factories
- Office buildings, banks and shopping centres
- Apartment building staircases and basements
- Hospitals, clinics, schools and hotels
- Restaurants, community centres and auditoriums
Recommended usage
Fix the sign above the exit door or on the wall along the escape route at about 2 to 2.5 m above the floor, choosing the arrow direction that matches the actual route. Connect it to a permanent unswitched 220 V supply so that it stays lit and charged. Test it monthly with the test button.
Safety instructions
Have the mains connection made by an electrician and isolate the supply before opening the unit. Make sure the arrow points along the real escape route — a sign pointing the wrong way, or to a locked door, is dangerous. Do not cover the sign with banners, decorations or stored goods. Dispose of worn-out batteries responsibly.
Frequently asked questions
Does an LED exit sign work during load-shedding?
Yes, a self-contained exit sign has a rechargeable battery and switches to it automatically when the mains fails. It stays lit for its rated backup time, typically 1.5 to 3 hours, and recharges when the power returns.
Which arrow direction should I choose for an exit sign?
Choose the arrow that points along the route a person must actually take from where the sign is seen. A down arrow is used directly above the exit door, and left or right arrows are used in corridors and on open floors to lead people towards the door.
At what height should an exit sign be installed?
Exit signs are normally mounted about 2 to 2.5 metres above the floor, usually directly above the door. That keeps them above head height and visible over people and furniture, without being so high that smoke under the ceiling hides them early.
What is the difference between a maintained and a non-maintained exit sign?
A maintained sign is lit all the time and stays lit on battery when the power fails, while a non-maintained fitting lights only when the mains fails. Exit signs are normally maintained so that people learn where the exits are; non-maintained operation is typical for escape-route emergency lights.
