Description
A hanging LED exit sign is an illuminated exit sign suspended from the ceiling so that it can be seen from far along a corridor or across an open floor. This slim type has a green face in a white frame carrying the word EXIT, the white running-man pictogram and a direction arrow, with LEDs inside lighting the whole face evenly. Two hooks on the top edge take the hanging chains, and a mains lead comes out of the top for connection to the supply.
When do you need a hanging sign instead of a wall sign?
- Long corridors — a sign hung across the corridor faces the people walking along it; a sign flat on the side wall is seen only at an angle.
- Open production floors and showrooms — the walls are far away or hidden behind racks, machines and displays.
- Corridor junctions — a hanging sign with an arrow shows which way to turn.
- Glass doors and shopfronts — where there is no solid wall above the door to fix a box sign to.
Hanging sign or wall-mounted box sign?
| Slim hanging sign | Box-type wall sign | |
|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Slim green panel in a white frame | Deeper illuminated box |
| Usual mounting | Suspended from the ceiling | Wall-mounted above a door |
| Best seen | From the front, along the route | From the front |
| Typical places | Lobbies, showrooms, offices, long corridors | Stair doors, factory exits |
Which arrow should you choose?
The arrow must point along the real escape route as seen by a person facing the sign. A left arrow leads people to the left, a right arrow to the right. Walk the route before ordering and note the direction needed at each position.
Installation and testing
- Hang the sign from the ceiling by chains fixed to its two top hooks, with at least 2 m of clear headroom below the panel.
- Connect its mains lead to an unswitched 220 V supply so that it stays lit and the battery stays charged.
- Keep banners, hanging decorations and stock from blocking the view.
- Switch off its supply briefly every month to check that it stays lit on the battery, and run a full-duration test once or twice a year; clean the face with a soft dry cloth.
Applications
- Long corridors and corridor junctions
- Open production floors and warehouses
- Showrooms, shopping centres and supermarkets
- Office lobbies, banks and hotel corridors
- Hospitals, airports and terminal buildings
- Glass shopfronts and doors without wall space above
Recommended usage
Suspend the sign from the ceiling across the escape route so that it faces approaching people, with at least 2 m of clear headroom beneath it, and choose the arrow direction that matches the real route. Connect it to a permanent unswitched 220 V supply and check monthly that it stays lit when the supply is switched off.
Safety instructions
Fix the suspension securely to the structural ceiling, not to loose ceiling tiles. Have the mains connection made by an electrician and isolate the supply before opening the housing. Check that the arrow points along the real escape route to an unlocked exit. Handle the sign face carefully — it scratches and can crack if struck.
Frequently asked questions
What do the running man and arrow on an exit sign mean?
The white figure running through a doorway on a green background is the internationally used pictogram for an emergency exit, and the arrow shows which way to go to reach it. The word EXIT is added so that the meaning is clear to everyone at a glance.
Where should a hanging exit sign be used?
Use a hanging exit sign where a wall-mounted sign would not be seen: across long corridors, at corridor junctions, over open production floors and showrooms, and at glass doors with no wall above. It faces people as they walk along the escape route.
How high should a hanging exit sign be?
Hang it so that the bottom of the panel is at least about 2 metres above the floor, which keeps it clear of people's heads, and generally not much higher than 2.5 to 3 metres so that it stays in the normal line of sight.
Does a hanging LED exit sign have battery backup?
Yes, a self-contained hanging exit sign carries a rechargeable battery inside its housing and switches to it automatically when the power fails. It typically stays lit for 1.5 to 3 hours from a full charge.
