How to Use a Fire Extinguisher

The four-step PASS method, when it is safe to fight a fire yourself, and when to leave.
A fire extinguisher is for small fires caught early. Before you use one, make sure someone has raised the alarm and that you have a clear way out behind you.
Before you start
- Raise the alarm and make sure the fire service is being called.
- Only tackle a fire that is small and not spreading.
- Keep your exit behind you. If the fire grows or smoke builds up, leave.
- Check the extinguisher suits what is burning. Water and foam must never be used on live electrical equipment or burning oil.
The PASS method
- Pull the safety pin. This breaks the seal and lets the handle move.
- Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire, not at the flames.
- Squeeze the handle to release the agent.
- Sweep the nozzle from side to side across the base of the fire until it is out.
Stand a few steps back and move closer as the fire shrinks. A portable extinguisher empties quickly, so make every second count.
Afterwards
Watch the area in case the fire re-ignites, and have the extinguisher refilled or replaced — even if it was only partly used.
Be ready before it happens
Know where the extinguishers are, check that nothing blocks them, and make sure the people who work or live with you have seen how one is used.

Leave and call the fire service if the fire is spreading, the room is filling with smoke, your exit could be cut off, or you do not have the right type of extinguisher.
