Description

A small home fire extinguisher is a 1 kg or 2 kg ABC dry powder unit that one person can lift with one hand and use within seconds. It is meant for the first minute of a small fire in a flat — a burning extension board, a waste bin, a curtain, a gas-stove flare-up — before the fire grows too big to fight.

What fires can it put out?

ABC powder (monoammonium phosphate) works on the fires most likely to start at home:

  • Class A — paper, cloth, wood, mattresses, plastics.
  • Class B — kerosene, petrol, paint, thinner.
  • Class C — burning gas from an LPG cylinder or line gas — only if the valve can be closed; if the gas cannot be stopped, leave and call 999.
  • Live electrical equipment — multiplugs, IPS and UPS units, fans, meters.

It is not the right tool for a pan of burning cooking oil: the powder jet can splash the oil. Use a fire blanket or a lid for that.

Which size should you choose?

Size Approximate discharge time Suits
1 kg 6–10 seconds One room, a small flat, beside the meter board, a study or shop counter
2 kg 8–12 seconds A family flat, a kitchen entrance, a garage, a small office

The discharge is short, so it only works on a fire that has just started. For a whole floor or a commercial space, larger wall-mounted extinguishers are needed.

How do you use it?

  1. Pull the safety pin.
  2. Stand about 1.5–2 metres away with the exit behind you.
  3. Aim the nozzle at the base of the flames.
  4. Squeeze the lever and sweep from side to side.

Where should it be kept?

Hang it on a wall hook where everyone can see it — near the kitchen door (not above the stove) or beside the main door. Check once a month that the gauge needle is in the green zone and the pin and seal are in place.

Applications

  • Flats and family homes
  • Kitchen entrances and dining areas
  • Small shops and pharmacy counters
  • Home offices and study rooms
  • Garages and store rooms
  • Beside meter boards, IPS and UPS units

Recommended usage

Hang the extinguisher on a wall hook near the kitchen door or the main exit, about 1 to 1.5 m above the floor and out of reach of small children. Make sure every adult in the home knows where it is and how to pull the pin, aim, squeeze and sweep.

Safety instructions

Only fight a fire that is small and when your escape route is clear; otherwise leave and call 999. Do not use on burning cooking oil. The powder cloud reduces visibility and irritates the throat in a closed room, so ventilate afterwards. Refill or replace after any use, even a short burst. Keep away from direct heat above 60 °C.

Frequently asked questions

Which fire extinguisher is best for home use in Bangladesh?

A 1 kg or 2 kg ABC dry powder extinguisher is the usual choice for a home, because one unit covers burning solids, flammable liquids, gas and electrical fires. Add a fire blanket in the kitchen for cooking-oil fires, which powder should not be used on.

Is a 1 kg fire extinguisher enough for a flat?

A 1 kg unit is enough for a very small fire in one room, as it discharges for only about 6–10 seconds. For a family flat a 2 kg unit, or one 1 kg unit near the kitchen and another near the bedrooms, gives a better margin.

Can I use an ABC extinguisher on a gas cylinder fire?

Yes, ABC powder can knock down burning gas, but the gas must be shut off or it will keep leaking and can re-ignite or explode. Close the regulator or cylinder valve if you can reach it safely; if you cannot, get everyone out and call the fire service.

How do I know if my home fire extinguisher still works?

Look at the pressure gauge: the needle should be in the green zone. Also check that the pin and seal are intact, the nozzle is not blocked and the body is not rusted or dented. A unit with the needle in the red zone needs refilling.
