Where to Install Smoke Detectors in a Home or Flat

By Fire Safety BD · Last updated

Which rooms need a detector, where on the ceiling it goes, the places to avoid, and how to keep it working.

Most deaths in house fires are caused by smoke, and often at night when everyone is asleep. A smoke detector gives the few minutes of warning needed to get out. A standalone, battery-powered unit needs no wiring and suits most flats.

Which rooms

  • Inside each bedroom, or at least in the passage outside the bedrooms.
  • The living room and any room with many electrical appliances.
  • At least one on every floor of a duplex or house.
  • Near the IPS, inverter or meter board area.

Where on the ceiling

  • On the ceiling, close to the middle of the room — smoke rises and spreads outward.
  • Away from corners, where air barely moves.
  • If it has to go on a wall, high up near the ceiling, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Places to avoid

  • Inside the kitchen and right outside the bathroom door: cooking smoke and steam cause false alarms. Use a self-contained heat alarm for the kitchen — not a panel-type heat detector, which has no sounder of its own.
  • Next to ceiling fans, air-conditioner outlets and windows, where moving air can carry smoke away from the detector.
  • Very dusty places.

Keep it working

  • Test it with the button every month.
  • Replace the battery at the low-battery chirp — never take it out and leave it out.
  • Wipe or vacuum dust from the vents now and then.
  • Do not paint over it.
  • Replace the unit at the end of the service life stated by the manufacturer.

A detector is only half the plan

A smoke detector senses smoke. It does not detect leaking cooking gas or carbon monoxide; those need their own detectors.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put a smoke detector in the kitchen?

Usually not inside the kitchen itself, because cooking smoke and steam cause false alarms. Fit it in the passage outside the kitchen; a self-contained heat alarm is the usual choice for the kitchen. A heat detector made for a fire alarm panel has no sounder of its own and will not warn you unless it is wired to a panel.

How often should a smoke detector be tested?

Press the test button once a month. Change the battery when the unit gives its low-battery chirp or as the manufacturer advises, and replace the whole detector at the end of the life stated on it.
