CO2 vs ABC Dry Powder Fire Extinguisher: Which One Do You Need?

By Fire Safety BD · Last updated

How the two most common extinguisher types differ, where each is generally used, and why many premises keep both.

ABC dry powder and CO2 are the two extinguisher types most people in Bangladesh meet first. They work differently and suit different places.

ABC dry powder

A dry powder extinguisher discharges a fine powder that smothers the fire. It is called multi-purpose because it is generally used on burning solids, flammable liquids and gases, and around electrical equipment.

Good to know

  • One unit covers several kinds of fire, which is why it is the common all-round choice.
  • The powder leaves a residue that needs cleaning and can damage sensitive electronics.
  • In a closed room the powder cloud can reduce visibility.

CO2

A CO2 extinguisher releases carbon dioxide gas, which displaces the oxygen around the fire. It is generally used on flammable liquids and around live electrical equipment.

Good to know

  • It leaves no residue, so it is favoured for server rooms, panels and electronics.
  • It does not cool burning solids well, so a fire in paper or wood can re-ignite.
  • The discharge horn becomes extremely cold — hold the handle, not the horn.
  • CO2 displaces air; take care in small, unventilated spaces.

Side by side

ABC dry powder CO2
Burning solids (paper, wood, cloth) Generally suitable Not the usual choice
Flammable liquids Generally suitable Generally suitable
Live electrical equipment Generally suitable, leaves residue Generally suitable, no residue
Burning cooking oil or fat Not suitable — use a fire blanket Not suitable — use a fire blanket
Clean-up Powder residue None

Which should you choose?

For general cover in a home, shop or corridor, a multi-purpose dry powder extinguisher is the usual starting point. Where there is valuable electrical or electronic equipment, a CO2 extinguisher protects it without the mess. Many offices and factories keep both.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a CO2 extinguisher on burning paper or wood?

CO2 is not the usual choice for solid materials because it does not cool them well and they can re-ignite. A dry powder, foam or water extinguisher is generally used for those.

Which is better near computers?

CO2 is widely used around electronics because it leaves no residue. Dry powder also works but leaves a powder that can damage equipment.
