Description

An exit sign emergency light combo is a single fitting that does two jobs: its illuminated red "EXIT" legend shows where the way out is, and its two LED lamp heads light the floor in front of the door when the mains supply fails. A rechargeable battery inside the white box powers both during a power cut. It is a practical choice above exit doors and stair entrances, where otherwise a separate exit sign and a separate emergency light would be needed.

How does the combo unit work?

The unit is wired permanently to the 220 V supply. With the electricity on, the EXIT legend is lit and the battery is kept charged. When the supply fails, the unit changes over to its battery automatically: the EXIT legend stays lit and the two lamp heads switch on. When the power returns, the lamp heads go off and the battery recharges.

Where is it used?

Location Why a combo unit suits it
Above final exit doors Marks the door and lights the threshold and steps outside
Stair entrances on each floor Shows the stair door and lights the landing
Shops, restaurants and clinics with one main exit One fitting covers both requirements
Warehouse and factory exit doors The lamp heads can be aimed along the aisle leading to the door

Red "EXIT" or green running man?

Both conventions are seen in Bangladesh. Red or green "EXIT" lettering follows American practice (NFPA 101), while the green running-man pictogram follows ISO 7010 and European practice. Choose one style and keep it the same on every floor; if your building is audited against a particular standard, follow the style that standard asks for.

Installation and testing

  • Mount it above the door or on the wall beside it, where it can be seen from the whole approach.
  • Connect it to an unswitched supply so that it charges all the time.
  • Aim the two heads at the floor along the route, not into people's eyes.
  • Press the test button every month and run a full-duration test once or twice a year.

Applications

  • Above final exit doors
  • Stair entrances on each floor
  • Shops, restaurants, clinics and community centres
  • Warehouse and factory exit doors
  • Basement car park exits
  • Auditoriums, halls and prayer halls

Recommended usage

Fix the unit above or beside the exit door, connect it to a permanent unswitched 220 V supply and aim the two lamp heads along the escape route. Allow about 24 hours of charging before the first test. Press the test button monthly and check once or twice a year that it runs for its full rated time.

Safety instructions

Have the mains connection made by an electrician and isolate the supply before opening the unit. Fit an exit sign only at a door that really leads out and is kept unlocked and clear — a sign over a blocked door is dangerous. Do not look into the lamp heads at close range. Dispose of worn-out batteries responsibly.

Frequently asked questions

What is an exit sign emergency light combo?

It is one fitting that combines an illuminated EXIT sign with two emergency lamp heads and a rechargeable battery. The sign marks the exit all the time, and the lamp heads light the route automatically when the power fails.

Does the EXIT sign stay lit when the power goes out?

Yes, the EXIT legend stays lit from the built-in battery when the mains fails, and the two lamp heads come on at the same time. The unit runs until the supply returns or the battery is exhausted, typically 1.5 to 3 hours from a full charge.

Should an exit sign be red or green?

Either can be acceptable, depending on the standard your building follows. American practice (NFPA 101) allows red or green EXIT lettering, while ISO 7010 and European practice use a green running-man pictogram. What matters most is using one consistent style throughout the building.

Where should a combo exit light be installed?

Install it directly above or beside an exit door or stair entrance, where it can be seen along the whole approach. Aim the two lamp heads along the floor of the escape route, one towards each side or both towards the route leading to the door.
