Description
An emergency foil blanket — also called a space blanket or rescue blanket — is a very thin sheet of plastic film coated with a reflective metal layer. Wrapped around a person, it reflects their own body heat back to them and blocks wind and rain, which slows the dangerous drop in body temperature that follows an accident, shock or soaking.
What is it used for?
- Road accident and injury victims — an injured person lying still loses heat quickly, even in warm weather. Covering them is a basic first aid step while waiting for help.
- People pulled from water — floods, boat accidents, drowning rescues.
- Cyclone and flood shelters — a windproof, waterproof layer when clothes and bedding are wet.
- Cold-wave nights in the northern districts, on hill treks and on overnight journeys.
- Sun and rain shelter — the same sheet works as a groundsheet, a rain cover or a reflective sunshade.
Which side goes where?
| Purpose | How to wrap |
|---|---|
| Keep a person warm | Silver side towards the body, gold side out |
| Keep heat and sun off | Gold side towards the body, silver side out |
Wrap the blanket closely around the body and over the head, leaving the face clear, and tuck it in so wind cannot get underneath. It works best over dry clothing or another blanket, because the film itself has no padding.
What is it made of?
The sheet is polyester (PET) film a small fraction of a millimetre thick, with a vapour-deposited aluminium layer. It is waterproof and windproof, folds to the size of a pack of cards and weighs about 50–60 g. A typical adult size is around 160 × 210 cm, large enough to wrap one person completely.
Why keep several?
They are single-use in practice — easy to tear once unfolded and hard to refold — and one is needed per person. Keep a few in the car, in every first aid kit and in the family emergency bag.
Applications
- Car, bus and motorcycle first aid kits
- Workplace and school first aid boxes
- Flood, cyclone and earthquake emergency bags
- Ambulances, rescue boats and relief teams
- Trekking, camping and overnight travel
- Sports events and marathons
Recommended usage
Open the pack, unfold the blanket fully and wrap it closely round the person, silver side inward to keep warmth in, covering the head but not the face. Put it over dry clothes or another layer where possible and tuck in the edges against the wind.
Safety instructions
The film is not flame resistant — keep it away from stoves, candles and open fire. The metal coating conducts electricity: do not use it near fallen power lines or live equipment, and keep it away during defibrillator use. Never cover the face, and do not leave the film with unattended small children because of the suffocation risk.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of an emergency blanket faces the body?
To keep someone warm, put the silver side towards the body and the gold side out. To protect from heat or strong sun, reverse it so the silver side faces outward and reflects the heat away.
Why is a foil blanket used after an accident?
An injured person in shock cannot keep themselves warm, and a falling body temperature makes their condition worse. A foil blanket reflects their body heat back and blocks wind and rain, which helps to keep them stable until medical help arrives.
Can an emergency blanket be reused?
It can be reused if it is not torn, but it is designed as a single-use item. The film creases and tears easily once unfolded and is hard to pack small again, so it is better to carry a fresh sealed one.
Is a space blanket as warm as a normal blanket?
No, it works differently. A foil blanket has no padding; it keeps you warm by reflecting your body heat and stopping wind and wet, so it is most effective wrapped over dry clothes or used together with an ordinary blanket.
