Description

A wet floor sign is a free-standing yellow plastic board that is put on a freshly mopped or wet floor to warn people that they may slip. This sign is a folding A-frame in bright yellow, printed in black on both faces with the word CAUTION, the slipping-person symbol in a warning triangle, and WET FLOOR. It has a carry handle at the top and folds flat when it is not in use.

Where should a wet floor sign be used?

  • While mopping or scrubbing corridors, lobbies, stairs and washrooms
  • At building entrances on rainy days, where water is carried in on shoes and umbrellas
  • Around a spill or a leaking pipe, AC or water dispenser until it is cleaned up
  • In restaurant kitchens, food courts and hospital wards where floors are washed often

Why this design?

  • Yellow with black print is the usual colour combination for a caution sign and is noticed quickly on a tiled floor.
  • Printed on both sides, so it warns people walking from either direction.
  • A-frame shape stands on its own on any flat floor and needs no fixing.
  • Folds flat and has a handle, so cleaners can carry it with a mop trolley.

How do you use it?

  1. Open the sign and place it at the edge of the wet area, on the side people approach from, before you start mopping.
  2. For a long corridor or a large hall, use a sign at each end.
  3. Leave it in place until the floor is completely dry.
  4. Then remove it — a sign left out all day on a dry floor is soon ignored.

How many signs do you need?

A practical rule is one sign for each cleaning trolley or cleaner, plus one for each main entrance of the building for the rainy season.

Applications

  • Office buildings, banks and corporate lobbies
  • Hospitals, clinics and diagnostic centres
  • Shopping malls, supermarkets and showrooms
  • Restaurants, hotel kitchens and food courts
  • Garment factories and warehouses
  • Schools, universities and mosques' ablution areas

Recommended usage

Place the sign at the approach to the wet area before cleaning starts, use one at each end of a corridor, and remove it as soon as the floor is dry. Keep one sign with every cleaning trolley and at each main entrance during the rainy season.

Safety instructions

The sign warns people but does not make the floor safe — dry the floor as soon as possible. Do not place the sign where it blocks a fire exit, a staircase landing or a narrow escape route, where it becomes a trip hazard itself. Replace the sign when the print has faded or the hinge is broken.

Frequently asked questions

What is a wet floor sign used for?

A wet floor sign warns people that a floor is wet or slippery so that they slow down or walk around it. It is put out during mopping, after a spill and at entrances on rainy days, and taken away when the floor is dry.

Why are wet floor signs yellow?

Yellow with black is the colour combination generally used for caution and warning signs, and it stands out strongly against most floors. People recognise a yellow A-frame as a slip warning even before they read the words.

Where should I place a wet floor sign?

Put it at the edge of the wet area on the side people approach from, where it is seen before they step on the wet floor. Use two signs for a corridor (one at each end) and never place it where it blocks an exit or staircase.

Is the wet floor sign printed on both sides?

Yes, the caution legend and the slipping symbol are printed on both faces of the A-frame, so the warning can be read from either direction of a corridor.
