Description
A fire extinguisher location sign is fixed above an extinguisher so that people can find it quickly in an emergency, even when the cylinder itself is hidden behind furniture, machines or a crowd. This sign is red with white lettering reading FIRE EXTINGUISHER, a large white arrow pointing down to the extinguisher, and a red-and-white striped border.
Why do you need a sign if the extinguisher is already red?
- An extinguisher hangs low, about a metre from the floor, and is easily hidden by stacked cartons, racks, sewing lines or parked trolleys. A sign fixed high above it is seen over these obstacles.
- In smoke or panic people look for the sign they have seen every day.
- An empty sign position shows at once that an extinguisher has been removed and not put back.
Flat or projecting — which one?
| Type | How it is seen | Use it |
|---|---|---|
| Flat wall sign | From in front of the wall | In rooms and open floors where people face the wall |
| Projecting sign (stands out at 90° from the wall, printed both sides) | From both directions along the wall | In corridors, aisles and long production floors |
In a corridor a flat sign is almost invisible until you are level with it; a projecting sign can be read from either end.
How should it be installed?
- Fix the sign on the wall or column directly above the extinguisher, with the arrow pointing down at it.
- Mount it high enough to be seen over people, goods and machines — commonly around 2 metres above the floor.
- Make sure it is not hidden by an open door, a curtain or a hanging banner.
- Use one sign for every extinguisher point.
Care
Wipe the sign during the monthly extinguisher check and confirm it is still fixed firmly and still points at an extinguisher that is actually in place.
Applications
- Garment and other factory production floors
- Warehouses, godowns and cold stores
- Office floors, corridors and lift lobbies
- Hospitals, schools and universities
- Shopping malls, restaurants and hotels
- Basement car parks and generator rooms
Recommended usage
Fix one sign directly above every fire extinguisher, about 2 m above the floor, with the arrow pointing at the extinguisher. Use the projecting type in corridors and aisles so it is seen from both directions, and the flat type in rooms and open floors.
Safety instructions
The sign must always point to a working extinguisher: if an extinguisher is moved or sent for refilling, put a replacement in its place. Do not let goods, doors or decorations cover the sign. Take care not to drill into concealed cables or pipes when fixing it to a wall.
Frequently asked questions
Where should a fire extinguisher sign be placed?
Place it on the wall or column directly above the extinguisher, high enough to be seen over people and stored goods — about 2 metres from the floor is common. The arrow should point down at the extinguisher.
What is a projecting fire extinguisher sign?
A projecting sign sticks out from the wall at a right angle and is printed on both faces, so it can be read from either direction along a corridor or aisle. A flat sign, by comparison, is only seen from in front of the wall.
Does every fire extinguisher need a sign?
Yes, it is good practice to mark every extinguisher point with its own sign, and fire safety inspections and buyer audits of factories in Bangladesh commonly check for it. The sign is what lets people find the extinguisher when it is hidden by goods or smoke.
Why are fire extinguisher signs red?
Red with white is the colour combination used for fire-fighting equipment signs, matching the red of extinguishers, hose reels and alarm call points. It lets people tell fire equipment signs apart from green exit signs and yellow warning signs at a glance.
