Description

A high voltage danger sign tells everyone who approaches an electrical installation that touching or entering it can kill. This sign has a red header with a warning triangle and the word DANGER, and a white panel reading "High Voltage Inside — For Your Safety KEEP OUT! — May cause injury or death", next to a pictogram of a person struck by an electric arc.

Where should a high voltage sign be fixed?

  • Sub-station doors, transformer yards and their fences or gates
  • HT and LT switchgear rooms, main distribution boards and bus-bar chambers
  • Generator rooms, capacitor banks and solar inverter rooms
  • Rooftop and basement electrical enclosures that the public can reach
  • Temporary site distribution boards on construction projects

Fix one sign on every door or gate that leads to the equipment, and on each side of a fenced enclosure, at about eye level.

Why does the sign have a picture as well as words?

Many of the people who pass an electrical room — cleaners, security guards, delivery staff, visitors and children — may not read English. The pictogram of a person being struck and the red DANGER header are understood without reading, while the text gives the exact instruction: keep out.

Which material should you choose?

Material Best for
Rigid PVC board Indoor doors and panel rooms
Aluminium plate Outdoor fences, gates and transformer yards exposed to sun and rain

Outdoor signs fade in strong sunlight over the years. Replace a sign when the red header has turned pale or the text is no longer easy to read from a few metres away.

Fixing

The sign has holes at the corners for screws, rivets or cable ties, so it can be fixed to a door, a wall or a chain-link fence.

Applications

  • Sub-stations and transformer yards
  • HT/LT switchgear and main distribution board rooms
  • Generator rooms and capacitor banks
  • Solar inverter and battery rooms
  • Construction site temporary power boards
  • Factory electrical enclosures and fenced equipment

Recommended usage

Fix the sign at eye level on every door, gate and fence side that gives access to high-voltage equipment, where it is seen before a person can reach the equipment. Choose aluminium for outdoor positions and rigid PVC indoors, and keep the sign clean and unobstructed.

Safety instructions

A sign does not make an installation safe: keep sub-station and panel room doors locked and allow only authorised electrical staff inside. Switch off and isolate the supply before drilling into or working on any electrical enclosure to fix the sign. Replace faded or damaged signs promptly.

Frequently asked questions

Where should a Danger High Voltage sign be installed?

Install it on every door, gate or fence that leads to high-voltage equipment such as a sub-station, transformer, HT switchgear or generator. It should be at about eye level and visible before anyone can touch or enter the equipment area.

What is the difference between a danger sign and a warning sign?

A danger sign, with a red header, is used where the hazard will cause death or serious injury if it is not avoided — live high-voltage equipment is the typical example. A yellow warning or caution sign is used for hazards that are less severe or less immediate.

Should I buy a PVC or an aluminium high voltage sign?

Choose aluminium for outdoor fences, gates and transformer yards, because it does not warp or become brittle in sun and rain. Rigid PVC is lighter and economical and is suitable for indoor doors and panel rooms.

What voltage is considered high voltage?

In electrical engineering, "high voltage" usually means above 1,000 V AC, which in Bangladesh covers 11 kV and 33 kV distribution equipment and transformers. In everyday site practice the sign is also put on 400 V main panels, because that voltage can be fatal too.
