Description
A no smoking sign shows that smoking is forbidden in the area where it is displayed. This one is the round prohibition symbol used internationally: a black burning cigarette on a white background inside a red circle with a red diagonal bar across it. It carries no words, so it is understood by everyone regardless of language.
Where is a no smoking sign needed?
- Fire-risk areas — fuel, LPG and chemical stores, generator rooms, paint and thinner stores, cotton, fabric and foam godowns, battery rooms
- Workplaces — garment factory floors, warehouses, workshops and offices
- Public places — hospitals, clinics, schools, restaurants, shops, lifts, waiting rooms and public transport
Bangladesh's tobacco control law prohibits smoking in public places and public transport and expects the people in charge of them to display a no-smoking notice. The round symbol is normally put up together with that written Bangla notice, because the symbol is seen from further away.
Which type should you choose?
| Type | Best for |
|---|---|
| Vinyl sticker | Glass doors, lift cabins, smooth painted walls, vehicles |
| Rigid PVC | Indoor walls, columns and doors |
| Aluminium | Outdoor walls, gates, fuel and gas storage areas |
Where should it be fixed?
- At every entrance to the no-smoking area, at eye level.
- Again inside large rooms, so that a sign can be seen from any point.
- Directly on the door or fence of high-risk stores such as fuel and LPG.
A sign covered by stacked goods or an open door is useless — check that it stays visible.
Reading the symbol
A red circle with a diagonal bar always means "do not". The black picture inside shows what is not allowed. The same family of signs includes "no open flame", "no entry" and "no mobile phones".
Applications
- Fuel, LPG, chemical and paint stores
- Garment factories, warehouses and godowns
- Generator, battery and electrical rooms
- Hospitals, clinics and schools
- Offices, lifts, restaurants and shops
- Buses, launches and other public transport
Recommended usage
Fix a sign at eye level at each entrance of the no-smoking area and repeat it inside large rooms. Use stickers on glass and lifts, rigid PVC on indoor walls and aluminium outdoors. In public places display it together with the written Bangla no-smoking notice.
Safety instructions
A sign alone does not control ignition sources in fuel, gas or chemical stores — also enforce the rule, provide a designated smoking area away from the risk and keep fire extinguishers nearby. Clean the surface before applying a sticker, and replace signs that have faded or peeled.
Frequently asked questions
Is it mandatory to display a no smoking sign in Bangladesh?
Yes, in public places and public transport. The Smoking and Tobacco Products Usage (Control) Act prohibits smoking there and requires the owner or person in charge to display a no-smoking notice. Check the current rules for the exact wording of the notice required for your premises.
What does a red circle with a diagonal line mean on a sign?
A red circle with a diagonal bar means that the action shown inside is prohibited. On this sign the picture is a burning cigarette, so the meaning is "no smoking".
Should I buy a no smoking sticker or a board?
Use a vinyl sticker on smooth, clean surfaces such as glass doors, lifts and vehicles, and a rigid PVC or aluminium sign on rough walls, columns, gates and fences. Aluminium lasts longest outdoors.
Where should no smoking signs be placed in a factory?
Place them at every entrance to the production floor and stores, and directly at high-risk points such as fabric and chemical stores, the generator and boiler rooms, the fuel tank and the LPG cylinder bank. Signs should be at eye level and not hidden by goods.
