Description
A 3-ply surgical face mask is a flat, pleated, disposable mask made of three layers of non-woven fabric with ear loops and a bendable nose wire. Its main job is to catch the droplets the wearer breathes, coughs or sneezes out, and to shield the nose and mouth from splashes. It is the everyday mask used in clinics, pharmacies, food preparation, offices and public transport across Bangladesh. This one is blue on the outside and white on the inside.
What are the three layers?
| Layer | Material | Job |
|---|---|---|
| Outer (blue) | Spunbond polypropylene | Repels splashes and droplets |
| Middle | Melt-blown polypropylene | The filter layer |
| Inner (white) | Soft spunbond polypropylene | Absorbs moisture from breath, comfortable on skin |
How do you wear a surgical mask correctly?
- Wash or sanitise your hands.
- Hold the mask with the coloured side out and the nose wire at the top.
- Loop it over both ears and pull the pleats down so the mask covers nose, mouth and chin.
- Pinch the nose wire to the shape of your nose.
- Do not touch the front while wearing it. Remove it by the loops and throw it in a bin.
Surgical mask or KN95 — which should you use?
A surgical mask fits loosely, so some air always passes round the edges. It is the right choice for source control — protecting other people, patients, food and products from the wearer — and for comfort over long hours. For fine dust, smoke and smog, or where you need to protect yourself from airborne particles, a close-fitting KN95, N95 or FFP2 mask is the better choice.
What to look for when buying for medical use
Masks intended for clinical use are classified to standards such as EN 14683 (Type I, II, IIR) or ASTM F2100 (Levels 1–3), which specify bacterial filtration efficiency and, for the higher grades, splash resistance. If you are buying for a hospital, operating theatre or audit requirement, check the type printed on the box. This listing is an economy general-purpose mask and we make no claim for a medical grade.
Storage and disposal
Keep the box closed, dry and away from sunlight. Use each mask once — for a few hours at most — and replace it sooner if it becomes damp. Dispose of used masks in a covered bin.
Applications
- Clinics, diagnostic centres, pharmacies and dental chambers
- Food processing, restaurants, bakeries and catering
- Garment and pharmaceutical production floors
- Offices, schools, banks and reception desks
- Public transport and crowded places
- Salons, parlours and cleaning staff
Recommended usage
Wear with the blue side out and the nose wire at the top, covering nose, mouth and chin. Use each mask once for a few hours at most, replace it when damp, and handle it only by the ear loops when removing.
Safety instructions
A surgical-style mask is not a respirator: it does not seal to the face and does not protect against fine dust, smoke, gases or chemical vapours. Do not wash or reuse. Not for children under two years or anyone who cannot remove the mask unaided. Dispose of used masks in a covered bin and wash your hands afterwards.
Frequently asked questions
Which side of a surgical mask goes outside?
The coloured (blue) side goes outside and the white side touches the face. The stiff nose wire goes at the top, and the pleats should open downwards on the outside so that droplets do not collect in them.
How long can one surgical mask be worn?
A disposable surgical mask should be worn for a few hours at most and then thrown away. Change it earlier if it becomes damp from breath or sweat, gets dirty, or has been taken off and handled.
Does a surgical mask protect against dust?
Only partly — a surgical mask stops large particles and splashes but does not seal to the face, so fine dust passes round the edges. For construction dust, cement, grinding or smog, use a KN95, N95 or FFP2 mask instead.
What does 3 ply mean in a face mask?
3 ply means the mask is made of three layers: a fluid-repelling outer layer, a melt-blown filter layer in the middle and a soft absorbent inner layer. The middle melt-blown layer does most of the filtering, so a mask without it is only a dust cover.
