Description

A lab coat is a knee-length white coat worn over ordinary clothes in laboratories, clinics and quality-control rooms. It keeps chemical drips, stains and biological material off your skin and your own clothes, and it can be taken off in seconds if something is spilled on it. In Bangladesh it is usually called an "apron" by science and medical students. This coat is white with a notched lapel collar, long sleeves, a button front and patch pockets, and comes new and folded in a clear bag.

Who needs a lab coat?

  • School, college and university students for chemistry, physics and biology practicals
  • Medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy students
  • Diagnostic and pathology laboratory staff
  • Pharmaceutical, food, textile and water-testing QC laboratories
  • Factory visitors and auditors on production floors

Why is a lab coat white with long sleeves?

  • White shows any spill or contamination immediately and can be washed hot or bleached.
  • Long sleeves protect the forearms, which are the part of the body closest to the bench.
  • Knee length covers the lap when sitting at a bench, where spills run off the edge.
  • Front buttons or press studs let the coat be pulled off quickly in an emergency.

Which size should you choose?

A lab coat is worn over clothes and should allow free arm movement, with sleeves reaching the wrist.

Size Chest of wearer (approx.) Typical height
S 86–91 cm 150–160 cm
M 91–97 cm 158–168 cm
L 97–104 cm 165–175 cm
XL 104–112 cm 170–180 cm
XXL 112–120 cm 175–185 cm

Which fabric is right for your laboratory?

Fabric Good for Caution
Poly-cotton blend (this coat) General teaching, clinical and QC labs; easy to wash, keeps its shape Melts and burns — not for work with open flames or large volumes of flammable solvents
100% cotton Work with Bunsen burners and flammables; chars rather than melts Creases, heavier
Flame-resistant treated fabric Pyrophoric and high fire-risk chemistry Costlier

How do you use and wash it?

Button the coat fully and keep the sleeves down while working. Take it off before leaving the laboratory — do not wear it in canteens, offices or on the street. Wash it separately from household clothes, and if a hazardous chemical soaks in, remove the coat at once.

Applications

  • School, college and university science laboratories
  • Medical, dental, nursing and pharmacy colleges
  • Diagnostic centres and pathology laboratories
  • Pharmaceutical, food and textile QC laboratories
  • Water, soil and environmental testing laboratories
  • Factory visitors and auditors

Recommended usage

Wear fully buttoned with sleeves down over long trousers and closed shoes, together with safety goggles and gloves suited to the chemicals in use. Remove it before leaving the laboratory and wash it separately from other clothing.

Safety instructions

A poly-cotton lab coat is not flame resistant and not chemical-proof: it slows a splash but does not stop corrosive liquids soaking through. Remove a contaminated coat immediately and rinse the skin with water. Do not use near open flames or for large volumes of flammable liquids — choose cotton or flame-resistant fabric for that work.

Frequently asked questions

Which lab coat size should a student buy?

Buy the size that fits your chest with a little room, since the coat goes over your clothes — for most college and university students that is M or L. The sleeves should reach the wrist and the hem should come to about the knee.

What is the difference between a lab coat and a doctor's apron?

They are essentially the same garment — a white, long-sleeve, knee-length coat. "Doctor's apron" is the name commonly used in Bangladesh for the white coat worn by medical students and doctors, while "lab coat" is the term used in laboratories; some medical coats are slightly more tailored or have a back belt.

Does a lab coat protect against acid?

Only briefly — a fabric lab coat absorbs a small splash and gives you a few seconds to take it off, but concentrated acid will soak through and attack the cloth. When handling concentrated acids or alkalis, wear a chemical-resistant apron over the lab coat, plus goggles and suitable gloves.

How should a lab coat be washed?

Wash it separately from household laundry with detergent in warm water, and bleach it if the fabric allows to remove stains. A coat heavily contaminated with a hazardous chemical or infectious material should not be taken home — it should be decontaminated or disposed of through the laboratory.
