Description
Disposable nitrile gloves are thin, single-use gloves made from nitrile rubber, a synthetic material that contains no natural latex. They form a barrier against body fluids, dirt, oils and splashes of many common chemicals, and are thrown away after one use. They are used in clinics and laboratories, food preparation, salons, cleaning, painting and vehicle servicing.
Why choose nitrile over latex or vinyl?
| Nitrile | Latex | Vinyl (PVC) | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Latex allergy risk | None | Yes | None |
| Puncture resistance | Good | Fair | Poor |
| Resistance to oils and fuels | Good | Poor | Fair |
| Stretch and feel | Good | Best | Loose fit |
| Cost | Medium | Medium | Lowest |
Nitrile is the usual choice when the wearer or the person being treated may be allergic to latex, and for work with oils and greases.
Which size should you choose?
Measure around the palm at its widest point, without the thumb:
| Size | Palm width (approx.) |
|---|---|
| S | 8 cm |
| M | 9 cm |
| L | 10–11 cm |
| XL | 11–12 cm |
The glove should fit closely without stretching tight across the palm. Each glove fits either hand, so a box of 100 pieces gives 50 pairs.
What does "powder-free" mean?
Older disposable gloves were dusted with cornstarch powder to make them easier to put on. The powder can carry allergens, irritate skin and contaminate food and samples, so powder-free gloves are now the norm. They are treated on the inside instead so they still slide on easily.
How to take them off safely
Pinch the outside of one glove at the wrist and peel it off inside out. Hold it in the gloved hand, slide a bare finger under the cuff of the second glove and peel it off over the first. Put the gloves in the bin and wash your hands.

Safety instructions
Single use only — do not wash or reuse. Thin disposable gloves give splash protection only and are not for prolonged contact with solvents or strong chemicals. They are not sterile surgical gloves. Do not use torn or punctured gloves, and keep the box away from heat and direct sunlight.
Frequently asked questions
How many gloves are in a box of nitrile gloves?
A standard box contains 100 individual gloves, which is 50 pairs. Each glove fits either hand, so there are no left and right gloves.
Are nitrile gloves safe for people with latex allergy?
Yes. Nitrile is a synthetic rubber with no natural rubber latex proteins, so it is the standard alternative for people with a latex allergy. A small number of people react to other chemicals used in glove manufacture.
Can disposable nitrile gloves be reused?
No. Disposable nitrile gloves are made for one use only. Washing or disinfecting them weakens the thin material and can leave contamination on the surface, so use a fresh pair each time.
Can nitrile gloves be used for food handling?
Powder-free nitrile gloves are widely used for food preparation. For commercial kitchens, choose gloves that the maker states are suitable for food contact, and change them between raw and cooked food.
What is the difference between nitrile gloves and surgical gloves?
Disposable nitrile examination gloves are non-sterile and fit either hand, while surgical gloves are sterile, individually packed in pairs and shaped for the left and right hand. Examination gloves are for routine procedures, not for surgery.
