Description

A Storz coupling is a symmetrical quick-connect fitting used to join fire hoses to each other and to hydrants, pumps and nozzles. Every Storz coupling of a given size is identical — there is no male or female half — and two of them lock together with a quarter turn. This is the hose-tail version in brass, with a black rubber seal in its face: the ribbed tail is pushed into the end of a hose and bound in place with wire or a clamp.

How does a Storz coupling work?

Each coupling has two hooked lugs and a matching slotted rim around a rubber seal. Two couplings are held face to face so that the lugs of each enter the slots of the other, then they are twisted in opposite directions until they stop. The seals press against each other and make the joint watertight. To release, twist the other way. A Storz spanner gives extra grip for tight or dirty couplings.

Which size do you need?

Storz couplings are named by letter and identified by the distance between the two lugs.

Size Hose bore Lug distance Typical use
C 52 mm 66 mm Attack hose, hose stations, small pumps
B 75 mm 89 mm Hydrant and pump delivery lines
A 110 mm 133 mm Large-diameter supply and suction lines

A coupling only connects to another of the same lug distance. To join two different sizes you need a Storz reducer, and to connect to an instantaneous or threaded outlet you need an adaptor.

In Bangladesh most building hydrant systems — landing valves, hydrant hose and breeching inlets — use 63 mm (2.5 inch) instantaneous couplings, not Storz. Storz couplings are found mainly on imported pumps and on plants built to European practice, so check what is already fitted on your site before you order.

How is it fitted to a hose?

  1. Cut the hose end square.
  2. Push the hose fully over the ribbed tail of the coupling.
  3. Bind it tightly with galvanised or stainless wire, or with a clamp of the correct size, over the ribs.
  4. Pressure-test the finished hose before putting it into service.

A hose needs two couplings, one for each end.

Care

Keep the seal clean and replace it when it is cracked, flattened or missing. Rinse sand and mud out of the lugs, and do not drop or drag the coupling on concrete — a bent rim will not lock properly.

Applications

  • Replacing damaged Storz couplings on fire hose
  • Making up new hose lengths for sites that use Storz fittings
  • Fire pump and trailer pump delivery lines
  • Industrial wash-down and dewatering hoses
  • Fire brigade and industrial fire team equipment

Recommended usage

Measure the lug distance of the couplings already on your site and order the same size, then order two couplings for each hose length. Bind the coupling over the full length of the ribbed tail and pressure-test the hose before it goes back into the hose box.

Safety instructions

A coupling that is badly bound can blow off a charged hose with great force — always pressure-test after fitting and stand clear of the couplings while pressure is raised. Make sure both couplings are turned fully to the stop before opening the valve. Never uncouple a hose that is still under pressure.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between Storz and instantaneous couplings?

A Storz coupling is symmetrical and locks with a quarter turn, while an instantaneous coupling has a separate male and female half that snap together when pushed. The two systems do not connect to each other, so a site should standardise on one type or keep adaptors at each hydrant. Most building hydrant systems in Bangladesh use 63 mm instantaneous couplings.

How do I know which Storz size I have?

Measure the distance between the two lugs across the face of the coupling. About 66 mm is size C for 52 mm hose, about 89 mm is size B for 75 mm hose, and about 133 mm is size A for 110 mm hose.

Why is my Storz coupling leaking?

A Storz joint usually leaks because a rubber seal is worn, cracked or missing, or because the couplings were not turned fully to the stop. Clean the faces, replace the seal and reconnect; if the rim is bent from being dropped, replace the coupling.

Is one coupling enough for a fire hose?

No, a fire hose needs two couplings, one at each end. Because Storz couplings are identical, you simply order two of the same size for every hose length.
