Description

Gauze swabs — also called gauze pads or gauze pieces — are squares of open-weave cotton cloth folded into several layers. They are used to clean around a wound, soak up blood and fluid, and act as a soft absorbent pad under a bandage or tape. Along with plasters and roll bandages, they are one of the basic consumables of every first aid box, clinic and dressing room.

What are gauze swabs used for?

  • Cleaning skin and the area around a wound with clean water or antiseptic
  • Absorbing blood and fluid and applying direct pressure to a bleeding cut
  • Padding a wound before it is bandaged
  • Applying or wiping away liquids and creams
  • General wiping in clinics, laboratories, salons and tattoo studios

Which size should you choose?

Size (folded) Typical use
5 × 5 cm Small cuts, cleaning, fingers and children's wounds
7.5 × 7.5 cm General first aid — the most common size in workplace boxes
10 × 10 cm Larger grazes, knees and elbows, pressure pads

Sterile or non-sterile — what is the difference?

These swabs are supplied non-sterile in bulk packs of 100, which is the economical choice for cleaning intact skin, padding, wiping and for clinics that sterilise their own dressings. For placing directly on an open wound, first-aid practice is to use an individually wrapped sterile gauze pad. Many first aid boxes carry both: a few sterile pads for the wound itself and a pack of non-sterile swabs for everything else.

What do "ply" and "mesh" mean?

Ply is the number of layers after folding — 8-ply and 12-ply are the common grades, and more layers mean more absorbency. Mesh describes how closely the threads are woven. For first aid, 8-ply cotton swabs are the usual all-round choice.

Storage

Keep the pack closed, dry and away from dust. Take swabs out with clean hands or forceps and do not put unused swabs back after they have touched a wound.

Applications

  • Factory, office and school first aid boxes
  • Clinics, diagnostic centres and dressing rooms
  • Pharmacies and health camps
  • Salons, tattoo studios and laboratories
  • Home and travel first aid kits

Recommended usage

Use a fresh swab for each wipe, working from the wound outwards, and discard it after use. As padding, lay one or more swabs over a sterile dressing and hold them with a roll bandage or adhesive tape.

Safety instructions

Supplied non-sterile: use an individually wrapped sterile pad for direct contact with open wounds unless the swabs have been sterilised. Single use only — do not wash and reuse. Dispose of blood-soiled swabs in a closed bag or clinical waste bin and wash your hands afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between sterile and non-sterile gauze?

Sterile gauze has been treated to be free of germs and is sealed in individual wrappers, so it can go straight onto an open wound. Non-sterile gauze is clean but not germ-free; it is used for cleaning intact skin, padding, wiping and absorbing, and costs much less per piece.

What size gauze swab is used in a first aid box?

The 7.5 × 7.5 cm gauze swab is the most common size in workplace first aid boxes. Add 5 × 5 cm swabs for small cuts and cleaning, and 10 × 10 cm swabs for larger grazes or for use as a pressure pad.

Can gauze swabs be reused after washing?

No, gauze swabs are single-use and should be thrown away after one use. A used swab holds blood, fluid and germs in its weave that washing at home cannot reliably remove, and the loosened threads can stick in a wound.

What is the difference between gauze swabs and a gauze bandage?

Gauze swabs are small folded squares used as a pad or for cleaning, while a gauze bandage is a long narrow roll used to wrap around a limb. In practice the swab goes on the wound and the roll bandage goes over it to hold it in place.
