Description

Foam ear plugs are small cylinders of soft, slow-recovery polyurethane foam that you roll thin, slide into the ear canal and let expand to seal it. They are the lightest and most economical hearing protection for factories and sites, and many people also use them for sleeping and travelling. These are orange, bullet-shaped, uncorded plugs intended for single use.

How do you insert foam ear plugs correctly?

Most complaints that "ear plugs do not work" come from plugs that are only half inserted. Use the roll–pull–hold method:

  1. Roll the plug between clean fingers into a thin, crease-free cylinder.
  2. Pull the top of your ear up and back with the opposite hand to straighten the ear canal.
  3. Hold the plug in place with a fingertip for 20–30 seconds while it expands.

When it is fitted properly, most of the plug is inside the canal and your own voice sounds deeper and louder to you.

Which pack should you choose?

50 pairs A small workshop or a team for a week or two
Box of 200 pairs Factory floors, dispensers at the entrance to noisy areas

Foam plugs or reusable plugs?

Foam plugs normally give the highest noise reduction of any ear plug when inserted deeply, and they cost the least per pair. Reusable flanged plugs are quicker to insert, can be washed, and suit people who take their protection in and out many times a day.

Hygiene

Handle the plugs with clean hands — dirt and oil on the foam go straight into the ear canal. Throw them away after use or as soon as they are dirty, hard or no longer expand. Do not wash and reuse disposable foam plugs.

What to look for on the packaging

Look for the attenuation figure — SNR (EN 352-2) or NRR — and choose one suited to your noise level. A plug that removes far more noise than necessary can make it hard to hear colleagues and warning signals.

Applications

  • Garment, textile and spinning mill floors
  • Generator rooms, workshops and fabrication shops
  • Construction sites and road works
  • Sleeping, studying and long-distance travel
  • Visitors entering noisy production areas

Recommended usage

Roll the plug into a thin cylinder with clean fingers, pull the ear up and back, insert the plug deep into the canal and hold it for 20–30 seconds while it expands. Use a new pair each shift, or sooner if the plugs get dirty.

Safety instructions

Insert and remove slowly — pulling a plug out quickly can hurt the eardrum. Do not use with dirty hands, and do not reuse disposable plugs. Keep away from small children: the plugs are a choking hazard. Stop using them and see a doctor if you have ear pain, discharge or an ear infection.

Frequently asked questions

Are foam ear plugs reusable?

No, disposable foam ear plugs are meant to be used once. The foam picks up ear wax, sweat and dirt and loses its ability to expand, so a reused plug both seals poorly and can carry infection into the ear. Use a fresh pair each shift.

Can I use foam ear plugs for sleeping?

Yes, soft foam ear plugs are widely used for sleeping, studying and travelling because they are comfortable when lying on the side. Insert them gently, do not push them out of reach, and stop using them if your ears feel sore or blocked.

Why do my ear plugs keep falling out?

Ear plugs usually fall out because they were not rolled thin enough or not inserted deep enough. Roll the plug into a tight cylinder, pull your ear up and back to straighten the canal, push the plug well in and hold it for about half a minute while it expands.

How many pairs of ear plugs does a factory need?

Plan on at least one pair per worker per shift, plus spares for visitors and replacements. A line of 50 operators working six days a week therefore uses roughly 300 pairs a week, which is why factories normally buy boxes of 200 pairs.
