Description

Safety glasses, also called safety spectacles, look like ordinary glasses but have an impact-resistant polycarbonate lens that wraps around the side of the face. They protect the eyes from flying chips, dust and small particles that come mainly from the front and sides. They are the lightest and most comfortable form of eye protection, which is why they are issued for all-day wear in workshops, factories, laboratories and on site visits.

What do safety glasses protect against?

  • Chips and swarf from drilling, turning and hammering
  • Wire ends, staples and broken strapping
  • Sawdust, grit and wind-blown dust
  • Twigs and debris in gardening and grass cutting

They do not seal against the face. Liquid splashes, fine airborne dust and particles falling from above can get past the lens — use safety goggles for those.

Why polycarbonate?

Polycarbonate is far tougher than glass or ordinary spectacle plastic: instead of shattering, it flexes and absorbs the impact. It is also light, and it absorbs most ultraviolet light even when it is clear. Its weakness is that it scratches, so it needs gentle cleaning.

Clear, tinted or yellow lens?

Lens Use
Clear Indoor and general work — the standard choice
Grey / smoke Outdoor work in bright sunlight
Yellow / amber Low light and haze, where more contrast helps

This listing is for the clear lens.

How should they fit?

The lens should sit close to the eyebrows and cheeks, with the wrapped ends covering the outer corner of each eye. The temple arms on this model adjust in length so the glasses stay put when you look down. They are worn instead of ordinary spectacles, not over them; people who wear prescription glasses should use over-spectacles or goggles.

Care and replacement

Rinse off grit before wiping, clean with water and mild soap, and dry with a soft cloth. Keep the glasses in a pouch, not loose in a toolbox. Replace them when scratches blur your vision or after a heavy impact — a lens that has taken a hard hit may be weakened even if it has not cracked.

For industrial use, look for lenses marked to EN 166 or ANSI Z87.1.

Applications

  • Machine shops, lathes and drilling work
  • Garment, electronics and assembly factories
  • Carpentry and furniture workshops
  • Laboratories and school workshops
  • Site visitors, supervisors and inspectors
  • Gardening, grass cutting and DIY work

Recommended usage

Adjust the temple arms so the lens sits close to the face and stays in place when you look down. Clean with water and a soft cloth and keep the glasses in a pouch. Issue goggles instead where there is liquid splash or fine dust.

Safety instructions

Safety glasses do not seal around the eyes and do not protect against liquid splash, fine dust, molten metal or welding light. For grinding, wear a face shield over them. Replace the glasses after a heavy impact or when scratches reduce vision. Not a substitute for prescription eyewear or sunglasses for driving.

Frequently asked questions

Are safety glasses different from normal glasses?

Yes. Safety glasses have an impact-resistant polycarbonate lens and side protection, while ordinary glasses and sunglasses can shatter and leave the sides of the eyes open. Ordinary glasses are not eye protection.

Can I wear safety glasses over my prescription glasses?

Wraparound safety glasses like these are not designed to go over prescription glasses. Use over-spectacles made for that purpose, or safety goggles, which have room for glasses underneath.

Do clear safety glasses block UV light?

Clear polycarbonate naturally absorbs most ultraviolet light, so clear safety glasses give useful UV protection. They do not reduce visible glare, and they are not protection against welding arcs.

Are safety glasses enough for grinding?

Not on their own. Grinding throws high-speed particles from many directions, so the usual practice is safety glasses or goggles worn under a full face shield.
