Description
Safety goggles are protective eyewear with a soft frame that sits against the face all the way round the eyes and is held in place by an elastic strap. Because there is no gap at the top, sides or bottom, they keep out dust, flying chips and liquid splashes that can get behind ordinary safety glasses. They are used for grinding, chipping, drilling overhead, handling chemicals, spraying and laboratory work.
Safety goggles or safety glasses — which do you need?
| Safety goggles | Safety glasses (spectacles) | |
|---|---|---|
| Seal around the eyes | Yes | No — open at the sides and bottom |
| Liquid splash | Yes | No |
| Fine dust | Yes | Limited |
| Flying particles from the front | Yes | Yes |
| Comfort for all-day wear | Warmer, can fog | Lighter and cooler |
| Worn over prescription glasses | Usually yes | Usually no |
Use goggles when the hazard is liquid, fine dust, or particles that can come from any direction. Use safety glasses for general impact protection in a clean, dry workplace.
What do the vents do?
A sealed goggle fogs up quickly in Bangladesh's humid heat. The vents in the frame let warm, damp air escape so the lens stays clearer. On an indirect-vent goggle the vents are covered or angled, so air can pass but a splash has no straight path to the eye — that is the type to choose for chemical work. A direct-vent goggle with open holes is for dust and impact only.
How do you wear them properly?
- Loosen the strap, place the goggles over the eyes and pull the strap over the back of the head, above the ears.
- Tighten until the frame touches the skin all the way round without pressing hard.
- Check that hair, a cap or a mask strap is not lifting the seal.
The wide one-piece lens gives room for most prescription spectacles underneath.
Care
Rinse the lens under clean water before wiping, then dry it with a soft cloth — dry dust rubbed across polycarbonate scratches it. Replace goggles when the lens is scratched or pitted enough to blur your view, or when the frame has hardened or the strap has lost its stretch.
When buying eye protection for industrial use, look for a lens marked to EN 166 or ANSI Z87.1.
Applications
- Grinding, chipping, cutting and drilling
- Chemical handling, mixing and decanting
- Laboratories and school science rooms
- Spray painting and pesticide spraying
- Woodworking, sanding and dusty demolition work
- Cleaning with strong detergents and disinfectants
Recommended usage
Fit the goggles so the frame touches the face all the way round and the strap sits above the ears. Rinse and wipe the lens with a soft cloth after use and store the goggles in a clean bag or case so the lens does not get scratched.
Safety instructions
Clear goggles do not protect against welding arc, gas-cutting glare or laser light — use the correct filter shade for those. For chemical splash, use only goggles with covered (indirect) vents. For grinding and other high-energy impact work, add a face shield over the goggles. Replace scratched, cracked or loose goggles.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between safety goggles and safety glasses?
Safety goggles seal against the face all the way round the eyes, while safety glasses sit like ordinary spectacles with gaps at the sides and bottom. Goggles are needed for liquid splash and fine dust; glasses are enough for general impact protection.
Can safety goggles be worn over prescription glasses?
Yes, most wide-lens goggles of this type fit over ordinary prescription spectacles. Check that the frame still seals against the face and that the arms of your glasses do not lift it.
How do I stop safety goggles from fogging?
Choose vented goggles, keep the lens clean and avoid wearing them pushed up on a sweaty forehead. Washing the inside of the lens with a drop of mild soap and letting it air dry leaves a thin film that reduces fogging for a while.
Can I use clear safety goggles for welding?
No. Clear goggles do not filter the intense ultraviolet and infrared light of a welding arc and can lead to painful arc eye. Welding needs a welding helmet or goggles with the correct dark filter shade.
Which goggles should I use for chemical work?
For chemical work, use sealed goggles with indirect (covered) vents, which let air through but block a direct splash. Goggles with open, direct vent holes are for dust and impact only.
