Description

A reflective safety vest is a sleeveless high-visibility garment worn over normal clothes so that drivers and machine operators can see the wearer from a distance. The fluorescent fabric makes the body stand out in daylight, dusk and rain, and the silver reflective bands shine back headlights and torches at night. This vest is fluorescent yellow-green with two horizontal reflective bands round the body.

How does a high-visibility vest work?

It combines two different materials:

  • Fluorescent background fabric converts invisible ultraviolet light into visible light, so it looks brighter than its surroundings in daytime and especially at dawn and dusk. It does nothing in the dark.
  • Retro-reflective tape sends light straight back towards its source, so the wearer lights up in vehicle headlights at night. It needs a light source to work.

That is why a proper safety vest always has both.

Which colour should you choose?

Colour Best contrast against Common users
Fluorescent yellow-green Buildings, roads, dark machinery, night work Construction, warehouses, factories, security
Fluorescent orange Green vegetation, sky, open land Road and rail work, surveyors, airport ramps

Many sites also use colour to tell roles apart — for example one colour for workers and another for supervisors, visitors or safety officers.

Who should wear one?

  • Construction and road-work crews
  • Warehouse, loading-bay and forklift areas
  • Traffic controllers, parking attendants and security guards
  • Delivery riders and cyclists at night
  • Drivers who must get out of a broken-down vehicle on a highway
  • Visitors on any working site

What to look for when buying

High-visibility clothing for professional use is classed under EN ISO 20471 (Class 1 to 3) or ANSI/ISEA 107, according to the area of fluorescent fabric and reflective tape. A waistcoat with two body bands is typically a Class 2 design. If your client or auditor requires a class, check the label sewn inside the vest; we make no class claim for this economy vest.

Care

Wash gently at low temperature without bleach and dry in the shade. Fluorescent fabric fades with sun and repeated washing — replace the vest when the colour is dull or the tape is cracked, peeling or dirty beyond cleaning.

Applications

  • Building construction and road-work sites
  • Warehouses, loading bays and forklift routes
  • Traffic control, parking and security duty
  • Factory yards, ports and container depots
  • Delivery riders and cyclists at night
  • Emergency use by drivers on highways
  • Site visitors and event volunteers

Recommended usage

Wear as the outermost layer, fastened at the front, so that the reflective bands go all the way round the body and are not covered by a jacket, bag or harness. Choose a size that fits over work clothes without hanging loose near moving machinery.

Safety instructions

A vest makes you easier to see; it does not stop a vehicle. Keep to walkways and stay out of blind spots. Not flame resistant — do not wear for welding or near open flame. Replace when faded, torn or when the reflective tape is cracked or peeling. Keep it fastened so it cannot catch in machinery.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between yellow and orange safety vests?

Both are equally visible in principle; the difference is the background they contrast with. Yellow-green stands out best against buildings, roads and dark equipment and is the brightest colour to the eye, while orange stands out against greenery and open sky and is traditional for road and rail work.

Does a reflective vest work at night without light?

No, reflective tape does not glow by itself — it only shines when a light such as a headlight or torch is pointed at it. In complete darkness with no light source the vest cannot be seen, so night workers also need site lighting or a personal light.

Can a logo or company name be printed on a safety vest?

Yes, a company name or logo can be screen-printed or heat-pressed on the back or chest of a polyester vest. Keep the print small enough that it does not cover the reflective bands or a large part of the fluorescent fabric, because that reduces visibility.

How often should a high-visibility vest be replaced?

Replace a vest as soon as the fluorescent colour looks dull or the reflective tape is cracked, peeling or permanently dirty. With daily outdoor use that is often after about six months to a year; a vest used only occasionally lasts much longer.
