Description
An orange reflective safety vest is a sleeveless high-visibility waistcoat in fluorescent orange-red with silver reflective bands, worn over ordinary clothing so the wearer is noticed by drivers and plant operators. Orange is the traditional colour for road and railway work because it stands out strongly against trees, fields and sky. This vest has two horizontal reflective bands low on the body and fastens at the front.
Why choose orange instead of yellow?
- Contrast with greenery — on highways, rural roads, railway lines and survey work the background is mostly green and blue, where orange is easier to pick out than yellow-green.
- Role identification — many sites put workers in one colour and supervisors, safety officers, riggers or visitors in the other.
- Sector custom — road contractors, railway gangs and airport ground handlers commonly specify orange.
Both colours are recognised fluorescent background colours for high-visibility clothing; neither is "safer" everywhere.
Where is it used?
| Workplace | Typical wearers |
|---|---|
| Roads and highways | Road-repair crews, flagmen, toll and traffic staff |
| Railways | Track maintenance gangs, gatemen |
| Construction | Banksmen, riggers, signallers, surveyors |
| Airports and ports | Ground handlers, marshals, yard staff |
| Events and campaigns | Volunteers, stewards, parking marshals |
How should it be worn?
- Put it on over your outermost clothing — a jacket worn on top hides the vest.
- Close the front fastening so the bands form complete rings round the body.
- Do not let a backpack, tool belt or harness cover the bands; if a harness must be worn, choose a vest designed to go with it.
- Pick a size that is loose enough for movement but not flapping near rotating parts.
What to look for when buying
For contract work, check whether the client specifies a class under EN ISO 20471 or ANSI/ISEA 107 and read the label inside the vest. A waistcoat with two body bands is typically a Class 2 design. We make no class claim for this economy vest.
Care
Gentle wash, low temperature, no bleach or fabric softener, dry in the shade. Replace the vest once the orange has faded or the tape no longer reflects brightly.
Applications
- Road repair, highway and bridge work
- Railway track maintenance
- Land survey and utility line work
- Airport ramps, ports and container yards
- Construction banksmen, riggers and signallers
- Event volunteers and parking marshals
Recommended usage
Wear as the top layer with the front closed so both reflective bands circle the body. Keep bags, belts and harness straps from covering the bands, and choose a size that fits over work clothes without hanging loose.
Safety instructions
High-visibility clothing reduces the chance of not being seen; it does not replace barriers, signage and safe traffic management. Not flame resistant — keep away from welding sparks and open flame. Replace when faded, torn or when the tape is cracked or peeling.
Frequently asked questions
Why do road workers wear orange vests?
Road workers wear orange because it contrasts strongly with the green and blue backgrounds found along roads and railways. Fluorescent orange is also widely associated with road works and warning signs, so drivers recognise it quickly as a signal to slow down.
Is an orange vest visible at night?
Yes, provided light falls on it — the silver reflective bands return headlight and torch beams to the driver. The orange fabric itself is a daytime and twilight feature and adds little in full darkness.
What size safety vest should I order?
Order one size larger than the shirt size, because the vest goes over work clothes or a jacket. Free size suits most slim to medium builds, and XL is the safer choice for larger workers or for wearing over winter clothing.
Can a safety vest be washed?
Yes, a polyester safety vest can be washed by hand or on a gentle cycle at low temperature. Avoid bleach, fabric softener, hard scrubbing and ironing over the tape, all of which damage the reflective surface and fade the fluorescent colour.
