Description
PVC gumboots are one-piece, knee-high waterproof boots moulded from polyvinyl chloride. Because the boot has no seams, water, mud, cement slurry and most dilute cleaning chemicals cannot get in. They are the everyday footwear for wet work in Bangladesh — concrete pouring, dyeing and washing floors, fish and food processing, farming, drain cleaning and getting through waterlogged streets in the monsoon.
What are gumboots used for?
- Concrete casting, piling and excavation in standing water
- Dyeing, washing and effluent treatment areas in textile factories
- Fish processing, cold stores, dairies and slaughterhouses
- Paddy fields, poultry and cattle farms
- Municipal cleaning, drainage work and flood relief
PVC or rubber gumboots?
| PVC gumboots | Natural rubber gumboots | |
|---|---|---|
| Weight | Lighter | Heavier |
| Flexibility | Stiffer, especially in cold weather | Softer and more flexible |
| Resistance to oils, fats and many chemicals | Good | Poorer with oils and fats |
| Cost | Lower | Higher |
Which size should you choose?
Sizes run from 39 to 45 on the European scale. Gumboots are worn loose so that trousers can be tucked in and the boot can be pulled off quickly; if you wear thick socks or are between sizes, choose the larger size. The top of the boot can be trimmed lower with a sharp knife if it rubs behind the knee.
Do these gumboots have a steel toe?
No — this is a plain waterproof gumboot without a steel toe cap or midsole. It keeps your feet dry and gives grip in mud, but it does not protect against falling objects or nails. On sites where those hazards exist, ask for a safety gumboot with a steel toe cap and midsole instead.
Care
Rinse off mud, cement and chemicals after each shift, and dry the boots upside down in the shade. Strong sunlight and heat make PVC hard and brittle over time.
Applications
- Concrete pouring, piling and wet excavation
- Textile dyeing, washing and effluent treatment areas
- Fish processing, cold storage and food plants
- Farming, poultry and dairy work
- Drain cleaning, sanitation and flood relief
- Monsoon use in waterlogged areas
Recommended usage
Wear gumboots with long cotton socks and tuck trousers inside when working in water, or leave them outside the boot when chemicals may splash and run down the leg. Rinse the boots after each shift and dry them upside down in the shade.
Safety instructions
This gumboot has no steel toe cap or puncture-resistant midsole and does not protect against falling objects or nails. It is not electrically insulating. Check for cracks and splits before use; a leaking boot must be replaced. Not for concentrated acids, solvents or hot surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
Are PVC gumboots fully waterproof?
Yes. A PVC gumboot is moulded in one piece with no seams, so it is waterproof up to the top of the leg. Water only gets in over the top, or through a cut or crack in a damaged boot.
Which gumboots are best for construction work?
For construction, a safety gumboot with a steel toe cap and steel midsole is the right choice, because sites have falling objects and nails. A plain PVC gumboot like this one suits wet work where those hazards are absent, such as curing, washing down and drainage.
What size gumboots should I buy?
Buy your normal shoe size, or one size larger if you wear thick socks or are between sizes. Gumboots should be loose enough to pull off easily but should not lift at the heel when you walk.
Can PVC gumboots be used with chemicals?
PVC resists water, detergents, dilute acids and alkalis, oils and fats reasonably well, which is why it is common in dyeing and food plants. It is not suitable for strong solvents such as thinner or acetone, or for concentrated acids.
