Description

Work knee pads are padded guards strapped over the knees to protect them from hard, rough or sharp surfaces when a job has to be done kneeling. These have a tough moulded plastic cap riveted over a thick foam cushion, a hard-wearing black fabric body and adjustable straps that close with hook-and-loop fastening. The cap spreads your weight and slides over the floor; the foam takes the pressure off the kneecap.

Who needs knee pads?

Anyone who kneels for more than a few minutes at a time:

  • tile, marble and mosaic fitters, floor finishers and masons;
  • plumbers, electricians and AC technicians working at floor level;
  • welders, fitters and vehicle mechanics;
  • carpet, vinyl and wooden flooring installers;
  • warehouse pickers, gardeners and cleaners.

Regular kneeling on concrete without protection is a well-known cause of long-term knee trouble, including bursitis, in the building trades. Knee pads are one of the simplest ways to reduce that risk.

Hard cap or soft pad?

Type Best on Keep in mind
Hard cap (this product) Rough concrete, gravel, rebar, debris, metal decks Cap can slip on smooth polished tiles and may mark delicate floors
Soft foam or gel pad Finished tiles, wood and vinyl floors Less protection from sharp objects

Hard caps also make it easy to shuffle or pivot while kneeling, which suits floor and pipe work.

How do you wear them?

  1. Sit down, bend the knee slightly and centre the cap over the kneecap.
  2. Fasten the lower strap below the knee, then the upper strap above the calf muscle — never straight across the back of the knee joint.
  3. Tighten until the pad stays in place when you walk, but not so tight that it pinches or restricts blood flow.

One size fits most adults; the straps adjust over work trousers.

Care

Brush off cement and grit after work and wipe with a damp cloth. Let the pads dry in the shade — do not leave them in strong sun or near heat, which hardens the foam. Replace them when the cap cracks or the foam no longer springs back.

Applications

  • Tile, marble and floor finishing work
  • Masonry, plumbing and electrical work at floor level
  • Welding, fitting and vehicle repair workshops
  • Carpet, vinyl and wooden flooring installation
  • Warehouse, gardening and cleaning tasks

Recommended usage

Centre the hard cap over the kneecap and fasten the straps above and below the knee, snug but not tight, over your work trousers. Take the pads off during long breaks, and stand up and straighten your legs every 20–30 minutes of kneeling.

Safety instructions

Knee pads reduce pressure and impact but do not make prolonged kneeling harmless — change position and take breaks. Do not over-tighten the straps. Hard caps can slip on smooth, wet or oily floors, so take care when standing up. They are not designed to protect against falls from height or heavy falling objects. Replace when the cap or straps are damaged.

Frequently asked questions

Which knee pads are good for tile work?

For laying tiles on rough screed or concrete, hard-cap knee pads with thick foam are the usual choice because they resist grit and let you slide along the floor. When you are kneeling on finished, polished tiles, soft or gel-faced pads grip better and will not mark the surface.

Are these knee pads one size?

Yes, they are one adjustable size that fits most adults. The straps with hook-and-loop closure let you tighten them over work trousers or loosen them for a larger leg.

Can work knee pads be used for motorcycle riding or skating?

No, work knee pads are made for kneeling, not for crash protection. Motorcycle and skating knee guards are shaped and tested for impact and sliding at speed; use protection designed for that activity.

Why do my knees hurt after kneeling at work?

Kneeling puts your body weight on a small area over the kneecap and the fluid-filled sac in front of it, which becomes irritated with repeated pressure. Padded knee pads spread the load and regular breaks help; pain or swelling that does not settle should be checked by a doctor.
