Description
A fire alarm pull station is a manual alarm box: pulling the white handle down closes a switch and sends the fire alarm panel into alarm, so the bells and horn strobes sound across the building. It does the same job as a break-glass manual call point but is the style used in systems designed to American practice (NFPA 72), which is why it is common in export garment factories and newer commercial buildings in Bangladesh.
How do you use a pull station?
- Grip the white handle marked "PULL DOWN".
- Pull it firmly downwards. The handle stays down, showing clearly that this station was operated.
- Leave the building by the nearest exit.
Nothing is broken, so there is no glass to replace. After the emergency, the responsible person opens the station with its key, returns the handle to the normal position and then resets the control panel.
Pull station or break-glass call point?
| Pull station | Break-glass call point | |
|---|---|---|
| Action | Pull the handle down | Press the element |
| After use | Reset with a key | Replace the glass or reset the element |
| Design practice | NFPA 72 (American) | EN 54 / BS 5839 (European) |
| Usual mounting height | About 1.07–1.22 m to the handle | About 1.4 m |
Use one style throughout a building so that everyone knows what to do, and match it to the standard your fire alarm system is designed to.
Where should pull stations be placed?
NFPA 72 places a manual station within about 1.5 m of each exit doorway on every floor, with extra stations so that the travel distance to the nearest one does not exceed about 61 m. They must be unobstructed, clearly visible and on the normal route out.
Wiring
This is a conventional, single-action station with a normally open contact. It is wired in parallel on the initiating (zone) circuit of the control panel, before the end-of-line resistor. Addressable systems need a station with an addressable module instead.
Applications
- Export garment factories and industrial buildings
- Exit doors and stair entrances on every floor
- Commercial towers and shopping centres
- Hospitals, hotels and educational buildings
- Warehouses and distribution centres
Recommended usage
Mount the station on the wall beside each exit door with the handle about 1.07 to 1.22 m above the floor, connect it to the zone circuit of a conventional panel and keep the reset key with the person responsible for the fire alarm. Operate each station during periodic system tests and reset it with the key afterwards.
Safety instructions
Pull only in a real emergency or during an authorised test; false alarms cause panic and unnecessary evacuation. Do not obstruct, cover or paint the station. Reset it with the key before resetting the panel — the alarm will return while the handle is still down. Isolate the circuit before opening the station for wiring.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pull station and a manual call point?
Both raise the fire alarm by hand; a pull station is operated by pulling a handle down, while a manual call point is operated by pressing a glass or plastic element. Pull stations belong to American-style (NFPA 72) systems and call points to European-style (EN 54) systems.
How do you reset a fire alarm pull station?
Open the station with its key, push the handle back up to the normal position and lock the station again, then reset the fire alarm control panel. If the panel is reset first, it goes straight back into alarm because the switch is still closed.
At what height is a fire alarm pull station installed?
Under NFPA 72 the operable part of a pull station is placed between 42 and 48 inches, about 1.07 to 1.22 metres, above the finished floor. That height keeps it reachable for most people, including wheelchair users.
Can a pull station be used with any fire alarm panel?
A conventional pull station works with conventional panels that accept normally open contact devices on the zone circuit. Check the panel manual for how contact devices must be connected, and for an addressable panel use an addressable station or a monitor module.
