Description

A fire alarm bell is the sounding device that warns people to leave the building when the fire alarm panel goes into alarm. This 6 inch (150 mm) red bell runs on the panel's 24 V DC sounder circuit: a small motor inside drives a striker against the steel gong, giving the continuous ringing that everybody recognises as a fire alarm.

Where is a fire alarm bell used?

Bells are fitted on walls in corridors, stair landings, lobbies, production floors and car parks — anywhere the alarm must be heard over normal background noise. They are wired to the sounder (bell) output of a conventional or addressable control panel and ring automatically when a detector or manual call point operates.

Bell, sounder or horn strobe — which one?

Device Sound Best for
Bell Mechanical ringing General areas; a sound people instantly recognise
Electronic sounder Selectable tones Compact fitting, lower current per device
Horn strobe Horn plus flashing light Noisy areas and for people who cannot hear the alarm

Use the same type of sound throughout one building so the alarm is not confused with a class bell or a machine alarm.

How many bells do you need?

The alarm should be clearly louder than the background noise everywhere in the building, including behind closed doors. As a starting point, plan at least one bell per floor near the staircase and add more in long corridors, noisy workshops and areas separated by fire doors. Check the panel manual for the maximum current of each sounder circuit before adding bells.

Wiring

The bell is polarised: connect the red lead to positive and the black lead to negative. Bells on one circuit are wired in parallel, with the end-of-line resistor at the last one so the panel can monitor the cable.

Applications

  • Corridors, lobbies and stair landings
  • Garment and factory production floors
  • Apartment buildings and car parks
  • Schools, colleges and hostels
  • Warehouses and cold stores
  • Markets and shopping centres

Recommended usage

Fix the bell to a solid wall or back box at about 2 to 2.5 m above the floor, connect it to the 24 V DC sounder circuit of the fire alarm panel with the correct polarity, and test it together with the weekly call point test. Do not mount it directly beside the panel, where its noise makes it hard to use the telephone or give instructions.

Safety instructions

Use only on a 24 V DC fire alarm sounder circuit — never connect it to 220 V mains. Switch off the sounder circuit before wiring. The bell is very loud at close range: do not test it next to your ear, and warn occupants before testing. Do not paint the gong or block the striker.

Frequently asked questions

Can a fire alarm bell be connected directly to 220 V?

No. This bell is made for the 24 V DC sounder output of a fire alarm panel, and connecting it to 220 V mains will destroy it and is dangerous. If you need a bell that runs straight from the mains, you must buy a 220 V AC model.

How loud is a 6 inch fire alarm bell?

A 6 inch 24 V DC bell produces roughly 90 to 95 dB measured at 1 metre. That is enough for a corridor, a stair landing or a medium-sized room, but large or noisy areas need several bells or a louder horn.

How many bells can one fire alarm panel run?

It depends on the current rating of the panel's sounder circuits, not on a fixed number. Add up the current of all bells on a circuit and keep the total below the limit in the panel manual; motor bells draw little current, so a small panel can usually drive several.

Does the polarity matter when wiring a fire alarm bell?

Yes, a 24 V DC fire alarm bell is polarised and will not ring if the wires are reversed. Connect the red lead to the positive terminal and the black lead to the negative terminal of the sounder circuit.
