Description
A crowd control barricade is a portable steel fence panel that stands on its own feet and is placed in a line to hold back, guide or stop people and vehicles. This barricade is a welded steel tube frame with vertical infill bars, painted black with yellow bands on the top rail and uprights so that it is easily seen, and it stands on two fixed feet.
Where is it used?
- Queues and crowd lines at events, rallies, fairs, stadiums and religious gatherings
- Entrances of markets, hospitals, schools, banks and offices
- Reserving parking bays and closing driveways and gates
- Blocking a road, lane or footpath for repair or for a VIP movement
- Separating pedestrians from vehicles in factories, depots and terminals
Why a steel barricade and not tape or cones?
- It is a physical barrier: people have to walk round it, not just notice it.
- It is heavy enough to stay in place in wind and when leaned on, but one or two people can carry it.
- It can be reused for years; a new coat of paint restores it.
- Several barricades placed end to end make a continuous fence in minutes.
Which length should you choose?
| Length | Typical use |
|---|---|
| 1.5 m | Gates, single parking bays, shop and office entrances, indoor use |
| 2 m | Roads, long queue lines, event perimeters — fewer units per metre |
Both sizes are approximately 1 metre high, which is about waist to chest height for an adult.
How do you set it up?
- Stand the barricades in a line with the feet at right angles to the fence line.
- Place them end to end without gaps; tie adjoining frames together with rope or cable ties where the crowd is dense.
- Leave clearly marked openings for emergency exit, and never chain a line shut across an escape route.
- At night, add reflective tape, cones or lights on barricades that stand in a road.
Care
Store the barricades stacked or leaning upright under cover. Touch up chipped paint before rust spreads, especially at the welds and feet.
Applications
- Events, rallies, fairs and stadium queues
- Market, hospital, school and office entrances
- Parking bays, driveways and gates
- Road, lane and footpath closures
- Factory, depot and terminal pedestrian separation
- Construction site access points
Recommended usage
Stand the barricades end to end with the feet at right angles to the line and tie adjoining frames together where crowds will press against them. Use the 1.5 m size at gates and parking bays and the 2 m size for roads and long lines. Add reflective tape, cones or lights at night.
Safety instructions
Do not block fire exits or escape routes, and leave marked emergency openings in every crowd line. A free-standing barricade can be pushed over by a dense crowd or a vehicle — it is not a vehicle barrier. Lift with two people and bent knees, keep fingers clear when stacking, and repair sharp or broken bars before use.
Frequently asked questions
What is a crowd control barricade?
It is a portable steel fence panel on feet that is placed in a line to guide or hold back people at events, entrances and road closures. Unlike tape or cones it is a physical barrier, but it can still be carried and repositioned by hand.
What size is a standard steel barricade?
Portable steel barricades are typically about 1 metre high and between 1.5 and 2.5 metres long. This model is offered in lengths of approximately 1.5 m and 2 m.
How many barricades do I need for an event?
Divide the total length of the line you want to fence by the length of one barricade: for example, a 30 m line needs 15 units of 2 m or 20 units of 1.5 m. Add a few spare units for gates and corners.
Will a painted steel barricade rust outdoors?
Painted mild steel will rust where the paint is chipped or scratched, especially in the rainy season. Touching up damaged paint promptly and storing the barricades under cover when they are not in use keeps them serviceable for years.
