Description

A bump cap is a light cap, shaped like a baseball cap, with a hard plastic shell hidden under the fabric. It protects the wearer from bumping or scraping the head on fixed objects — shelf edges, machine frames, pipes, vehicle bonnets and low ceilings. It is meant for places where nothing can fall from above but knocks to the head are common.

What is a bump cap used for?

  • Warehouse picking and packing between racks and under mezzanines
  • Vehicle servicing, especially under a bonnet or a lifted car
  • Machine maintenance and work inside ducts, plant rooms and crawl spaces
  • Food processing, delivery and airport ground work where a full helmet is too bulky

Bump cap or safety helmet?

Bump cap Safety helmet
Protects against Knocking your own head on fixed objects Falling and flying objects
Weight Light, roughly 150–250 g Roughly 300–400 g
Typical marking to look for EN 812 EN 397 or ANSI Z89.1
Use on construction sites No Yes

A bump cap is not a substitute for a safety helmet. If tools, materials or loads can fall from above, a safety helmet is required.

How is it made?

The outer cap is a cotton or polyester-cotton fabric with a stiff peak and metal ventilation eyelets. Inside sits a removable ABS or polyethylene shell, usually with a foam comfort pad. The back has an adjustable strap, so one size fits most adults. The fabric cap can be washed once the shell is taken out.

The photo shows the green cap. Navy blue and black are the same model in a different fabric colour.

Applications

  • Warehouse picking, packing and racking aisles
  • Vehicle workshops and garages
  • Machine and building maintenance in low-headroom spaces
  • Food and beverage processing lines
  • Delivery, logistics and airport ground handling

Recommended usage

Use a bump cap only where the risk is knocking your head on fixed objects. Adjust the rear strap so the cap sits firmly, and make sure the plastic shell is seated inside the fabric before each use. Remove the shell before washing the cap.

Safety instructions

A bump cap does not protect against falling or thrown objects, or against moving or suspended loads — use a safety helmet in those areas. Replace the cap if the inner shell is cracked or deformed, or after a hard knock. Never wear the fabric cap without its shell as head protection.

Frequently asked questions

Is a bump cap the same as a hard hat?

No. A bump cap only protects against bumping your head on fixed objects, while a hard hat (safety helmet) protects against falling objects. A bump cap must not be used on construction sites or under lifting operations.

Who should wear a bump cap?

Bump caps suit people who work in tight, low spaces with no overhead falling hazard — warehouse pickers, mechanics, maintenance technicians, delivery staff and food-plant workers.

Can a bump cap be washed?

Yes, the fabric cap can be washed after you take out the plastic shell. Wipe the shell itself with a damp cloth and mild soap, let both parts dry fully, then refit the shell.

Which standard should a bump cap be marked with?

Industrial bump caps are normally marked to EN 812. Check for that marking on the inner shell when you buy for workplace use; it is a different and lighter requirement than the EN 397 helmet standard.
