Fire extinguishers
- Extinguishers are easy to see and reach, with nothing stored in front of them.
- Each extinguisher suits the risks in the area where it is placed.

- Service or refill dates are current and recorded.
- Staff know where the extinguishers are and have been shown how to use one.
Escape routes and exits
- Corridors, stairways and exit doors are clear and never locked or blocked during working hours.

- Emergency lighting works when mains power is cut.
- An assembly point is agreed and everyone knows it.
Detection and alarm
- Smoke or heat detectors are installed where appropriate and tested regularly.

Electrical safety
- Extension leads and multi-plugs are not overloaded or daisy-chained.
- Damaged cables, plugs and sockets are taken out of use.
- Server and electrical rooms are kept free of stored paper and boxes.
- Equipment is switched off at the end of the day where practical.
First aid and preparedness
- A stocked first aid box is available and its location is known.
- Emergency numbers are displayed.
- An evacuation drill has been carried out and recorded.
Restaurant / kitchen — Checklist
Kitchen and cooking
- A fire blanket is mounted within reach of the cooking line, away from where flames would block it.
- Extinguishing equipment suited to cooking-oil fires is available in the kitchen.
- Hoods, filters and ducts are cleaned of grease on a schedule.
- Cooking is never left unattended, and oil is never overheated.
- Staff know never to use water on burning oil.
Gas
- Gas cylinders are stored upright in a ventilated place, away from heat.
- Hoses and regulators are checked for wear and leaks and replaced when due.
- Staff know how to shut off the gas supply.
- A gas leak detector is fitted where appropriate.

- Workers have the PPE their task requires — helmets, gloves, eye, ear and foot protection.
- PPE is in good condition and replaced when damaged.
- Workers have been shown how to wear and care for it.
Emergency readiness
- Fire hose reels and hydrant points are accessible and checked.
- First aid boxes are stocked on every floor or section.
- Evacuation drills are held and recorded, including night shifts.
- Warning signs mark hazards, exits and equipment.
Home — Checklist
Kitchen
- A fire blanket or small extinguisher is kept near the kitchen exit.
- The gas hose and regulator are in good condition; the cylinder valve is closed when not in use.
- Cooking is not left unattended.
Around the home
- A smoke detector is fitted outside bedrooms and tested monthly.
- Multi-plugs are not overloaded; damaged cables are replaced.
- Matches, lighters and mosquito coils are kept away from curtains and bedding.
- Everyone knows two ways out and where to meet outside.
- Emergency numbers are saved on every phone.
