Description

A fire hose reel is a drum of semi-rigid hose that is permanently connected to the building's water supply, so that one person can pull the hose out and start fighting a fire within seconds. This reel has a red pressed-steel drum wound with red hose that ends in a black nozzle. It is supplied as the reel alone, without a cabinet, and is fixed to an open wall or fitted inside a recess or a separate hose-reel cabinet. It gives occupants a continuous supply of water for a fire in its early stage, long before a fire brigade arrives.

What is a fire hose reel used for?

A hose reel is for Class A fires — paper, cardboard, cloth, wood, plastics and packaging. Because the water does not run out the way an extinguisher does, it is the main first-aid appliance for garment floors, warehouses, markets, offices and the corridors of apartment buildings. It must not be used on live electrical equipment or on burning oil and flammable liquids.

How is it different from a lay-flat fire hose?

Hose reel Lay-flat hose on a landing valve
Hose Semi-rigid, 19 or 25 mm, always round Flat, 38 or 63 mm, must be fully run out
Who can use it Any trained occupant, alone Trained team, usually two people
Ready to use Water flows even with hose partly unwound Only after the whole hose is laid out
Water flow Lower Much higher

Which size should you choose?

  • 19 mm × 30 m — lighter to pull; the usual choice for offices, shops, hotels and residential buildings.
  • 25 mm × 30 m — more water at the nozzle; preferred for factories, warehouses and other high fire-load areas, provided the supply can feed it.

Place reels so that the nozzle can be taken into every room: the 30 m of hose plus roughly 6 m of jet should reach every part of the floor, measured along the route a person actually walks.

How do you use it?

  1. Open the inlet stop valve beside the reel fully.
  2. Take hold of the nozzle.
  3. Pull the hose off the drum toward the fire.
  4. Open the nozzle and aim the water at the base of the flames.

Maintenance

Check each month that the drum turns freely, the valve turns, nothing is stacked in front of the reel, and the hose and nozzle show no cracks or leaks. Once a year run the hose out completely, flow water through it and check the reach of the jet. When choosing a reel, look for a hose and reel marked to a recognised hose-reel standard such as EN 671-1.

Applications

  • Garment, textile and other factory floors
  • Warehouses, godowns and cold storages
  • Shopping malls, markets and showrooms
  • Office and commercial buildings
  • Apartment building corridors and car parks
  • Hospitals, schools and hotels

Recommended usage

Fix the reel to a solid wall beside an exit or staircase, with the reel centre about 1 to 1.5 m above the floor and clear space in front for the hose to be pulled off. Connect it to a pressurised water supply through the inlet stop valve, and train the people who work on that floor to use it.

Safety instructions

Use only on Class A fires — never on live electrical equipment, burning oil or flammable liquids. Always keep the exit behind you and leave if the fire is not controlled quickly. Open the stop valve before pulling the hose out, keep the reel unobstructed, and do not use the reel for washing floors or vehicles.

Frequently asked questions

What is the standard length of a fire hose reel?

The standard fire hose reel carries 30 m of semi-rigid hose, in 19 mm or 25 mm bore. Thirty metres is the usual maximum because a longer hose loses too much pressure and becomes too heavy for one person to pull.

What is the difference between a swinging and a fixed hose reel?

A swinging hose reel is mounted on a hinged arm and turns outward, while a fixed reel stays flat against the wall and feeds the hose through a guide. The swinging type is used inside cabinets and recesses because the hose can then be pulled left, right or straight ahead without snagging; a fixed reel suits an open wall. Decide where the reel will go before you order.

Can a fire hose reel be used on an electrical fire?

No, a fire hose reel delivers water and must not be used on live electrical equipment. Switch off the power first, or use a CO2 or dry powder fire extinguisher for panels, machines and wiring.

How many hose reels does a floor need?

A floor needs enough hose reels for a nozzle to reach every part of it, which in practice means every point lies within the 30 m hose length plus about 6 m of jet from a reel. Measure along real walking routes around walls and machines, and follow the fire safety plan drawn up for your building.

Which is better, a 19 mm or a 25 mm hose reel?

A 25 mm hose reel delivers more water, and a 19 mm reel is lighter and easier to pull. Choose 25 mm for factories and warehouses with a strong water supply, and 19 mm for offices, shops and residential buildings.
