Description

A fire extinguisher cabinet is a wall-mounted box that holds a portable fire extinguisher where people can see it but cannot knock it, soil it or walk off with it. This one is made of brushed stainless steel and is set into the wall with a flat trim frame around it. The hinged door has a clear window so the extinguisher and its pressure gauge can be checked without opening it, a pull handle, a lock, and the words FIRE EXTINGUISHER in red down the front.

Why put an extinguisher in a cabinet?

  • Protection — keeps dust, moisture, cleaning water and knocks from trolleys away from the cylinder, hose and gauge.
  • Tamper and theft control — discourages people from playing with or removing the extinguisher in public areas.
  • Clear corridors — a recessed cabinet does not project into a corridor the way a bracket-mounted extinguisher does.
  • Appearance — suits lobbies, hotels, hospitals, showrooms and offices where a bare extinguisher looks out of place.

Which size do you need?

Cabinet Fits
Medium One extinguisher up to about 6 kg (for example a 4–6 kg ABC powder or a 2–3 kg CO2 unit)
Large One extinguisher up to about 9 kg (for example a 9 kg powder, 9 litre foam or water, or a 5 kg CO2 unit)

Extinguishers of the same capacity differ in height and diameter, and CO2 units have a wide horn. Measure your extinguisher — height including the valve, and the widest point — and compare it with the internal dimensions of the cabinet before ordering.

How is it installed?

A recessed or semi-recessed cabinet sits in an opening cut or left in the wall, with the trim frame covering the edge; it is fixed through the sides or back of the box. Where the wall cannot be cut, the same cabinet can be fixed on the surface. Mount it so that the extinguisher handle is roughly 1 to 1.5 m above the floor, on an escape route and near the risk it protects.

Will the lock slow people down in a fire?

An extinguisher must be reachable in seconds. If you use the lock, make sure the door can still be opened in an emergency — for example by keeping the cabinet unlocked during working hours or by using a door designed to be pulled or broken open — and put a fire extinguisher sign above the cabinet so it can be found from a distance.

Care

Wipe the steel and window with a soft cloth, check that the door opens freely, and keep nothing else stored inside. The extinguisher itself still needs its monthly check and annual service.

Applications

  • Office, bank and corporate building corridors
  • Hotels, hospitals and clinics
  • Shopping malls, showrooms and restaurants
  • Apartment lobbies, lift lobbies and car parks
  • Schools, universities and auditoriums
  • Clean factory areas and laboratories

Recommended usage

Install on an escape route near the risk, with the extinguisher handle about 1 to 1.5 m above the floor and a fire extinguisher sign above the cabinet. Measure the extinguisher against the cabinet before ordering, and keep the door unobstructed and openable without a key whenever the building is occupied.

Safety instructions

Never leave the cabinet locked in a way that prevents quick access in a fire. Do not store anything other than the extinguisher inside, and do not block the door with furniture or goods. A cabinet does not replace maintenance — continue the monthly visual check and annual service of the extinguisher.

Frequently asked questions

What size cabinet do I need for a 5 kg fire extinguisher?

A 5 kg ABC powder extinguisher normally fits the medium cabinet, while a 5 kg CO2 extinguisher needs the large cabinet because the CO2 cylinder is taller and has a wide horn. Measure the height and widest point of your extinguisher and compare them with the cabinet's internal dimensions to be sure.

Is a fire extinguisher cabinet necessary?

A cabinet is not always required, but it is the better choice in public, dusty, damp or busy areas. It protects the extinguisher from damage, tampering and theft and keeps corridors clear; in a locked plant room or a private office a simple wall bracket is usually enough.

Should a fire extinguisher cabinet be kept locked?

A fire extinguisher cabinet should not be locked in a way that delays access during a fire. If theft is a concern, use the lock only when the building is empty, or choose an arrangement that lets the door be pulled or broken open in an emergency.

What is the difference between a recessed and a surface-mounted cabinet?

A recessed cabinet sits inside the wall with only its frame and door showing, while a surface-mounted cabinet is fixed on the face of the wall and projects into the room. Recessed cabinets keep corridors clear but need a wall opening; surface mounting suits solid walls that cannot be cut.
