Description
A clear face shield is a transparent plastic visor that hangs from a headband and covers the whole face, from forehead to below the chin. It stops splashes, sprays and droplets from reaching the eyes, nose and mouth, and keeps the wearer from touching the face. This lightweight type is used in clinics and dental chambers, laboratories, food processing, cleaning, salons and at service counters.
What does a face shield protect against?
- Splashes of liquids such as cleaning chemicals, disinfectants and dyes
- Droplets and sprays from coughing, dental work and patient care
- Splatter in food processing, fish cutting and butchery
- Dust and light, low-speed debris
Because the visor is open at the sides and bottom, a face shield is always a second layer: wear safety glasses or goggles underneath for eye protection, and a mask where one is needed.
Light splash shield or industrial grinding visor?
| Light face shield (this product) | Industrial face shield | |
|---|---|---|
| Visor | Thin flexible clear sheet, about 0.2–0.5 mm | Thick polycarbonate, about 1–2 mm |
| Headgear | Simple headband with elastic strap | Ratchet headgear with brow guard, flip-up |
| Weight | Very light | Heavier |
| Use | Splash, droplets, light dust | Grinding, chipping, brush cutting, hot splashes |
This product is the light type. It is not rated for grinding, cutting discs, chipping or any high-speed particles; for those jobs choose an industrial face shield whose visor is marked for impact to EN 166 or ANSI Z87.1.
How is it made?
The visor is a clear plastic sheet clipped onto pegs on a yellow headband, so a scratched visor can be changed without replacing the frame. A reinforcing strip along the bottom edge holds the curve of the visor, and an adjustable elastic strap at the back keeps the shield on the head. The headband stands the visor off the forehead, leaving room for spectacles and a mask.
Cleaning and reuse
Wash the visor and headband with soap and water, or wipe with a disinfectant that is safe for plastics, and let them air dry. Avoid abrasive cloths and solvents such as thinner, which cloud the visor. Replace the visor when it is scratched, cracked or cloudy.
The photo shows the shield with a yellow headband; the visor itself is clear.
Applications
- Clinics, dental chambers and diagnostic laboratories
- Cleaning and disinfection work
- Food processing, fish and meat cutting
- Salons and beauty parlours
- Reception, cash and service counters
- School and college laboratories
Recommended usage
Peel any protective film off the visor, fit the headband level on the forehead and adjust the strap so the shield stays put when you bend forward. Wear safety glasses or goggles underneath. Wash with soap and water after use and let it air dry.
Safety instructions
This lightweight shield is for splash and droplets only — it is not impact rated and must not be used for grinding, cutting, chipping or welding. It does not replace a mask or respirator and does not seal around the face. Keep it away from flames and hot surfaces; the visor is thin plastic.
Frequently asked questions
What is a face shield used for?
A face shield is used to keep splashes, sprays and droplets off the whole face. Light shields like this one are worn in clinics, laboratories, cleaning and food work, while heavier industrial shields are worn for grinding and chipping.
Can I use this face shield for grinding?
No. This is a thin splash shield with no impact rating, and a fragment from a grinding or cutting disc can go straight through it. For grinding, use an industrial face shield with a thick polycarbonate visor over safety glasses.
Does a face shield replace a mask?
No. A face shield is open at the sides and bottom, so it blocks direct splashes but does not filter the air you breathe. Where a mask or respirator is required, wear it under the shield.
Can a face shield be worn with glasses?
Yes. The headband holds the visor away from the forehead, which leaves room for prescription spectacles, safety glasses and a mask underneath.
How do I clean a face shield?
Wash it with soap and water or wipe it with a plastic-safe disinfectant, then let it air dry. Do not use thinner, acetone or rough cloths, which scratch and cloud the visor.
